What is the People’s Vote campaign and what are their rallies about?

HUNDREDS of people are expected at tonight’s “Let Us Be Heard” rally in Derby, urging a people’s vote on any Brexit deal.

Politicians and campaigners, including Dame Margaret Beckett and Lord Heseltine, will attend the event. But what is the People’s Vote campaign and why are 15 rallies planned across Britain during summer?

Thousands took to the streets of central London to voice their support for staying in the EU

What is the People’s Vote?

The group is campaigning for a “final say on the Brexit deal”, saying it’s “the only way forward” as “whichever way you voted two years ago, nobody voted for a deal that makes you poorer and offers less control”.

The grassroots campaign was launched at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London, on April 15, 2018, and is supported by Open Britain, the European Movement UK and Britain for Europe, among others.

MPs Chuka Umunna, Anna Sobry, Layla Moran and Caroline Lucas as well as comedian Andy Parsons and Sir Patrick Stewart attended the launch of the campaign.

There are more than 700,000 campaign supporters, 20,000 activists and over a million followers on social media, with “more joining every day”, the group says.

More than 700,000 Remainers took part in a People’s Voice march demanding a second vote on staying in the European Union in the capital last October.

Dame Margaret Beckett says Brexit shouldn’t be ‘forced through Parliament’

What are their rallies about?

The People’s Vote says that celebrities, political leaders and “hundreds of friendly faces” will gather tonight in Derby where they will listen to former Tory deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine, and former deputy Labour leader Margaret Beckett.

She will say: “Michael and I have had our differences over the years but we are together on this same platform because we know the stakes are so huge.”

The free one-hour-long rally starts at 7pm at the Grand River Suite, Northcliffe House.

It’s one of 15 such summer events organised across Britain until October 12 – when a march will be held in London.

Similar rallies have already been held in Leeds, Cheltenham, Sunderland and the capital.

People’s Vote is also holding a Birmingham/West Midlands Rally on July 30, in The Great Hall at the University of Birmingham, from 6.30pm.

Birmingham’s event is followed by rallies in Gateshead in the north east (September 1); Luton (September 5); Newport, Wales (September 13); Glasgow, Scotland (to be announced); Brighton (September 21) and Manchester (September 29).

Organisers said there is “all to fight for as patriotic Conservatives aim to block no deal.

On Facebook the group is calling for people to attend the rallies and march

“The Conservative leadership contest finally comes to an end early next week and Boris Johnson seems certain to win the votes of most of the 160,000 members.

“Johnson says he will take us out of the EU by October 31 ‘do or die’, but he advocates extreme forms of Brexit – even no deal – that have never been put to the people, and have only been approved by the 0.25 per cent of population who are Conservative members.

“It’s an outrage against democracy and must be stopped.

“This week has shown that the battle is nowhere near over and that only a People’s Vote can resolve the biggest issue of our times.”

Dame Margaret Beckett, MP for Derby South, said that “as the UK stumbles towards the new Brexit deadline of October 31… we are approaching a new cliff-edge of accidentally crashing out of the EU with no deal.

“Instead of trying to force Brexit through Parliament and on the country, we believe… a people’s voice is the only way out of this crisis.”
