Arriving flights are being diverted to other airports. Ryanair flights FR1885 and FR206 to Stansted are currently being sent to Luton. The closure is understood to be to allow for urgent runway works, according to Airlive. Stansted Airport apologised to passengers for the closure.
A spokesman for the airport wrote on Twitter: “Apologies for the delay. Aircraft are currently being held from departing or arriving at @STN_Airport to allow minor runway works to be safely carried out.
“This being said, you should be on your way swiftly.
“Thank you for your patience.”
Flight passengers were left angered by the news.
Ant Smith wrote: “The whole morning lost stuck on the tarmac.”
Another said the situation was confusing. He said: “Sitting on a plane on the tarmac and there’s no workers outside.
“Seat belt sign on. They say runway is reopened.”
Stansted staff said the runway reopened just after 10am but disruption has continued for many flights.
