Outlander season 6: Claire and Jamie Fraser ‘go through revolution’ after horrific attack

The American Revolution continues in the upcoming sixth season of Starz’ popular historical romance, Outlander. Finding themselves in the midst of the most pivotal war of the 18th century, Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) will confront the darker aspects of their relationship at home in Fraser’s Ridge.

Season six of Outlander has finally returned to filming and is teased to feature Jamie and Claire’s hardest test to date.

Production restarted earlier this month following extensive delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and is tentatively hoped to return to Starz and Amazon Prime by the end of the year.

In the meantime, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts has been busy previewing the next instalment with a recent interview with Elle.

The series’ head writer touched on some of the biggest challenges facing a television shoot during the pandemic, as well as teasing the next stage of the Frasers’ epic adventure.

Season six will pick up with the whole Fraser family deciding to remain in Fraser’s Ridge, including their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton), husband Roger (Richard Rankin) and baby Jemmy.

As well as the rapidly expanding American Revolution, Roberts confirmed Jamie and Claire will face troubles of their own that could mirror the brutal war against the English redcoats.

He explained: “I think what’s going on in the world at the time, 1775, is really similar to what’s going on with Jamie and Claire.

“There’s going to be a revolution with them as well, and I think that’s what’s going on throughout the season.”

He continued: “You have a foundation and when that foundation is shaken and there is a revolution, you have to deal with it. That’s kind of the theme of the season.”

The sixth season of Outlander will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book in the original series of novels, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Once again exploring the time-traveller Claire’s passionate yet fraught relationship with Jamie, a Highland warrior from the 1700s, next season of Outlander could also be its most action-packed instalment yet.

Season six will also pick up directly where the fifth chapter left off, meaning the devastating events of last year’s outing could be addressed in the very next episode, ‘Echoes’.

When Elle inquired if there would be a significant time jump at the beginning of season six, Roberts said: “No, not significantly, because there’s a lot of story we need to connect.

“There were a lot of things left in the finale of season 5 that we still have to tell.

“It wouldn’t make sense to a new viewer, especially with a lot of the new viewers coming on to Outlander.”

Following Claire’s horrendous attack and Jamie’s loyalties continuing to be tested, fans won’t want to miss what will undoubtedly be another momentous season premiere.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz and Amazon Prime Video now.
