Matt Chapman’s Good, Bad and Ugly from this week’s world of horse racing

WELCOME to my latest Good Bad Ugly column.

After a week of rain, Cheltenham, Douvan and Faugheen there are plenty of candidates to get a mention – but who does? Let’s find out…

Good

This is a game where if you get a chance you have to take it. So take a bow Tom Bellamy, who has really shone this season and is on the verge of going serious places.

Bellamy has been given a chance by Alan King on the retirement of Wayne Hutchinson. Bellamy now rides as second jockey to King behind Tom Cannon, the top cat.

Last week I was at Bangor when Bellamy steered Alsa Mix to a Listed chase win for King, and of course on Saturday he landed the Greatwood with Harambe.

I was at Cheltenham, and saw Tom walking the course with old man and former rider Robert Bellamy and his brother Archie. It showed he’s a professional and doing all he can to get an edge.

On the horse front, wasn’t it great to see Faugheen skip over fences the other day. The former Champion Hurdle hero is coming to the larger obstacles late into life, but he mainly jumped well. It left me wishing he had gone chasing a few years ago.

Bad

I advertised the plight of Robbie Downey, the jockey who faces a six month suspension for a positive cocaine test in France in the paper on Saturday.

Downey is still waiting to hear from the BHA. I have no idea what the delay is, but they organisation really should crack on and help the lad. He has been wronged.

Ugly

There were ugly scenes in the carpark at Cheltenham Saturday when I got back to my car only to find a big nail had caused a puncture.

It wasn’t easy getting a replacement Sunday morning before going on air. Now I clearly got the better of Ruby Walsh in some friendly banter on the Opening Show on ITV Saturday morning – Ruby you didn’t did you?!
