Liverpool player ratings vs Man Utd: Rhys Williams poor as Reds dumped out of FA Cup

Liverpool’s misery continued on Sunday night as bitter rivals Manchester United dumped them out of the fourth round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford. The returning Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino combined twice to score both of the Reds’ goals, ending their four-game goalless streak. But Mason Greenwood cancelled out Salah’s opener before Marcus Rashford put United ahead early in the second half, the Egyptian then levelling 10 minutes later. Bruno Fernandes came off the bench to win it for United and the Reds are now without a win in six games across all competitions. Express Sport rates and slates Jurgen Klopp’s team after another disappointing result.

Liverpool player ratings vs Man Utd

Alisson – 6

Denied Greenwood with his feet early on and could do little more for either of the first two goals. Fernandes’ free-kick was pinpoint but Brazilian will be disappointed he was beatean on his side. Poor pass in the first half also forced Fabinho’s booking.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6

A better second half than his first and more involved offensively to force a good stop from Dean Henderson second half. But struggled to deal with the runs of Rashford and Shaw in the first 45 minutes and then guilty of losing Edinson Cavani late on when the striker headed against the post.

Rhys Williams – 3

Fine passing the ball out from the back and good in the air but otherwise unfortunately well out of his depth. Wasn’t punished after diving in and being beaten by Rashford in first half but then was when he completely missed the ball to let striker through to make it 2-1. Almost gifted Fernandes a late attempt but did recover well to be fair to him.

Fabinho – 5

His shielding presence in midfield sorely lacked and not his best night at centre-back. Out of position for the first goal, he was outsmarted by Cavani to give away the free-kick Bruno Fernandes scored. Picked up first-half yellow for foul on Greenwood but was played into trouble by Alisson.

Andy Robertson – 5

Tried his best to put off Greenwood for his goal with a scream but failed to do so. Might’ve done better with first-half cross and otherwise couldn’t get into crossing positions enough.

Thiago Alcantara – 5

Had some typically clever moments on the ball including one pass in the lead up to the second goal but perhaps not as controlling as Liverpool needed him to be. Defensively struggled and made a few poor tackles. Good block for McTominay effort before half-time but then guilty of ducking for Fernandes’ goal.

Gini Wijnaldum – 5

Key in the move which led to the Liverpool goal by finding Firmino but too often slow on the ball. Not a surprise he was hooked on the hour mark.

James Milner – 6

The best of the midfield trio. Beaten by Rashford’s lovely lofted ball over to Greenwood but not much he could do about such a brilliant pass. Fired over the bar but then soon after won the ball and was smart to dummy it for Salah to score.

Curtis Jones – 5

Played out wide but couldn’t have much of an impact on the ball for as hard as he worked off of it. Had some flashes down the left late on but most of his best work came when he drifted centrally.

Mohamed Salah – 8

Sensational finish to lift it over Henderson to make it 1-0 and then made it 2-2 with a low effort from inside the box. Good vision to feed Alexander-Arnold for one second-half effort. Had chance for hat-trick after Firmino pass but couldn’t net and Liverpool were made to pay, but this defeat not on Salah’s head.

Roberto Firmino – 7

A bit of a mixed performance but when he played well, Liverpool ticked offensively. A superb slide-rule through ball for Salah’s first and a clever pass inside for the Egyptian’s second. Showed good footwork at times but then too sloppy on other occasions. Set Salah through for a third but Henderson denied him.

Tried but couldn’t engineer a late leveller to force extra time.
