Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William have supported frontline workers throughout the pandemic by listening to their stories and offering support. The couple visited Newham ambulance station in east London this morning to hear how staff have been coping during the pandemic.

The visit from the royal couple is the second in-person appearance this year after the ongoing pandemic forced the couple to turn to virtual video calls.

The Cambridges heard about the support provided by staff at the station, which offers drop-in sessions and wellbeing spaces.

During their visit, Kate and William took the time to speak with a few members of the team to find out about how they have been dealing with the pandemic.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James analysed Kate’s signals on today’s outing.

“Kate’s trait of holding her clutch bags in front of her torso in a barrier gesture did appear to be vanishing as she gained in confidence and public popularity as a stand-alone, top-tier royal after Megxit but it is back again here to hint at some vulnerability, with what looks like an additional signal,” said Judi.

Throughout the visit, the Duchess can also be seen fiddling with her engagement ring on multiple occasions, a trait which Judi also picked up on some of Kate’s previous appearances.

Judi explained: “With both hands on the bag, Kate’s left hand is placed on top in the clasp and this gesture makes a feature of her engagement ring, which once belonged to Diana.

“People under pressure will often touch or feature their wedding bands to suggest a desire for back-up or support from the people they love.”

Judi explained: “It isn’t a gesture I have seen from her before and I doubt it is connected to the video chat as she handles these with ease and enthusiasm and looks equally engaged here.

“It hints about brewing turmoil inside the family and the way that Kate is otherwise dressed and smiling in a way that signals resilience and ‘business as usual’ makes this gestural link to Diana even more poignant.”

For the visit, the Duchess for one of her favourite coats by designer Massimo Dutti.

The long-length coat featured six buttons down the front as well as two pocket flaps.

She paired the look with a matching colour clutch bag and tan heels as well as donning a pale face mask.
