Grow up, Guy! Twitter turns on Verhofstadt over Trump jibe: ‘How old are you, six?

Mr Trump quit the White House this morning with First Lady Melania, flying to a military base in Maryland on Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. In doing so, he became the first US President in more than 150 years to boycott the inauguration ceremony of his successor, in this case Joe Biden, who defeated Mr Trump by more than seven million votes in the November 3 election.

Mr Verhofstadt, a longstanding critic of the billionaire businessman, could not resist one last dig, tweeting a clip of the helicopter taking off.

He commented: “Bye Bye, Mr Trump! The only tears in Europe will be from the far-right & their friends in the Kremlin.

“Now, let the repair work begin!”

And Sam De Wijze asked: “When will you’re helicopter land in the EU to take you away?

“After destroying Belgium, you are now doing the same in the EU.”

Others, meanwhile, referenced Brexit.

One Twitter user asked: “Why is everyone that doesn’t agree with you labelled as far-right Guy? Who says your option is correct?

“Once again you are dividing people and polarising opinions.

“The stupid mindset of ‘you’re not with me so must be against me’ really must stop!”

Democrat Biden, 78, will become the oldest US president in history at a scaled-back ceremony in Washington amid coronavirus and security concerns after the January 6 assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

Mr Trump, a Republican, left the White House with his wife Melania just after 8am (1300 GMT) and went by helicopter to a sendoff event at Joint Air Force Base Andrews.

There he promised supporters “we’ll be back in some form” and extolled his administration’s successes before flying off to Florida.
