Dad Manuel Hernandez, his partner, and their relatives challenged hospital staff after being given the coffin filled with rubbish[/caption]

And the couple claim they were later given the body of a different baby boy when they begged staff to let them put their son to rest.

Dad Manuel and the newborn’s mum – who has not been named in reports – delivered the baby boy on August 9 in Ocosingo, Mexico.

But the newborn suffered complications and was rushed to the emergency ward before being transferred to Palenque General Hospital.

Tragically, the baby died the following day after medics lost their desperate battle to save him, according to local media reports.

A relative of the mourning couple returned to the hospital a few hours later to pick up the boy’s body in a white coffin to bring home to his parents.

But when the couple opened coffin later they claim it was filled with plastic bags wrapped in a sheet – and there was no body inside.

They then went back to the hospital with other relatives and reportedly demanded an explanation.

After rowing with medics, Hernandez and his partner were eventually given the body of a baby boy.

But they have since claimed that the body is not that of their son.

Health officials have said that they will open an investigation.

The hospital is yet to comment on the claims.
