Brexiteer pressure stuns Sturgeon: SNP voters furious at plot to 'surrender' to Brussels

The SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon is under pressure from a “considerable chunk” of Leavers within her own party ahead of the December 12 election. The BBC’s political expert Lynsey Bews remarked the block of SNP voters who also backed Brexit had been underestimated in polling. This comes after Richard Blakey, a voter from Aberdeen, wrote to the BBC to question why Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would want to surrender sovereignty back to the EU.

Mr Blakey wrote: “If Scotland left the UK, would we be surrendering sovereignty to the EU to the same extent as we do now to Westminster?”

If Scotland secured independence from the UK after Britain leaves the EU, Ms Sturgeon has long-campaigned to return Scotland to Brussels and the EU bloc.

Ms Bews predicted Scotland would likely return without the key opt-outs and leverage that it saw during the UK’s membership of the EU.

She told the BBC: “The SNP policy is for an independent Scotland to become a member-state of the EU. It is likely to look broadly like the relationship the UK has with the EU now.”

However, the political analyst added the relationship between Scotland and the EU would “depend on discussions and negotiations”.

She said: “The UK had some opt-outs like the Schengen Zone, with passports at the borders, and on the euro as well.

“What you quite often hear from SNP supporters that back Scotland leaving the UK, is, if we are taking back control of our own affairs, why are we not also leaving the EU?

“There is a considerable chunk of SNP supporters that back leaving the EU.”

Earlier this week, on Thursday, the Labour leader said a second independence referendum would not happen in the first two years of a Labour Government.

However, on Wednesday he said a referendum would not happen in the first five-year term.

At the same time, Ms Sturgeon has said she intends to hold an independence referendum in the second half of 2020.

She has also backed having another referendum on Brexit next year.
