An anti-Brexit protester was dealt with swiftly by security services on Thursday as they jumped in front of Prime Minister Theresa May’s motorcade as she arrived for Brexit talks. Mrs May is in Brussels in hope of securing enough changes to the backstop which can persuade MPs to support the deal in a series of votes expected on February 14.

Sky News’ Europe correspondent Mark Stone said there were a group of protesters gathered outside of the European Parliament building in Brussels on Thursday.

He said: “There are three of four of them, actually. You can still see them just over here gathering with yellow hats on which say ‘something to Brexit’, the B word – I’ll let you guess what that it.”

Mr Stone added: “That was quite a moment. We have seen the Prime Minister drive in here so many times over the past two years.

“Never before has someone literally jumped in front of what they thought was her car.

“I don’t know if it actually was her car to try and stop it and pretty quickly some plain clothes Belgian security officers moved him out of the way and they car then went in.”

In a series of face-to-face talks with EU chiefs in Brussels, Mrs May is set to call on the EU to stop Britain being “trapped” into a customs union as part of the so-called backstop measure to keep the Northern Irish border free of checks.

Downing Street insiders say Mrs May is braced for a flat refusal to her request from European President Jean-Claude Juncker, EU Council President Donald Tusk and other EU figures today.

But they believe the discussions today will begin an intense burst of negotiations that they hope will see the EU make the concessions needed to agree a deal that can be approved by Parliament.
